Kootenai Health uses two-step verification when users log in as an added layer of security.
What is two-step verification?
Also called multi-factor authentication or two-step authentication, this extra step creates additional security to keep your information safe when logging in from a new device or new internet browser. It ensures that even if your MyChart password is stolen, others will not be able to access your account without the code.
- Step One: Log in with your usual username and password
- Step Two: You’ll be prompted to enter a verification code that will be sent via text message or email to the contact information in your MyChart account
Quick tip: Ensure your information is up to date
For the best experience, it is important that your current mobile phone number and email address are in your MyChart account.
- In MyChart, select Menu, then Personal Information (under Account Settings toward the bottom) to view your current contact information, and then select the Edit button to make changes. Be sure to click the green Save changes button before leaving the page.
- If you need additional help, please contact MyChart customer support at 844-388-2356, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
What to expect
When you log in for the first time on a new device (smartphone, computer, tablet, etc.) or a new internet browser (including Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari), you’ll be prompted to complete two-step verification.
- After you complete Step One (logging in with your username and password), you will be able to choose where to receive the verification code (through text message or email*).
- After completing Step Two (entering the verification code), you will have the option to select Skip this step next time and you won’t be asked to complete Step Two again for 90 days on that device and/or browser.
*If you do not have a mobile number on file, email will be your only option in Step Two. To add a mobile number to your account, you can update your personal information in MyChart at any time.
Can Two-Step Verification Be Disabled?
This feature is now required by Epic as an added layer of security for MyChart users and cannot be disabled.
Create a passkey
Passkeys provide a more secure way to log in to your account. They allow you to bypass two-factor authentication by using your device’s built-in security, such as a PIN or biometric login (fingerprint, Face ID or other methods).
- Passkeys are now available when logging in to MyChart from a browser.
- Before setting up a passkey, you must enable two-factor authentication.
- Once your passkey is set up, you can log in through the username field or the Log in with passkey button on the MyChart login page.
How do I set up a passkey?
- Log in to MyChart using your username, password and two-factor authentication.
- Navigate to Explore More at the bottom of your home screen and select Log in with a passkey, or go to Account Settings → Manage passkeys → Passkey Management.
- Click Add new passkey and follow the prompts for your browser or operating system.
If you have been in your MyChart session for more than 10 minutes, you will need to reenter your account password for security.
Once set up, use the pencil icon to edit or rename the passkey to your preference.
How do I log in with a passkey?
- Instead of entering a username and password, select Log in with passkey.
- Unlock your passkey using your chosen identification method, such as biometrics (Face ID, fingerprint) or your device PIN.
How do I remove a passkey?
If you are switching devices and/or no longer need access to an old passkey:
- Go to Passkey Management under Account Settings and click the Remove passkey button (trash icon).
- Remove the passkey from your password manager (Google Password Manager, iCloud Keychain, etc.) for full removal.
If I set up a passkey, is that the only way I can log in to MyChart?
No. Users with passkeys can choose to log in using their username and password (with two-factor authentication) or log in with a passkey.
