Kootenai Health is a 330-bed community hospital set in northern Idaho. The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency at Kootenai Health is a 12-month, ASHP accredited program. The pharmacy residency program provides experience in a broad area of pharmacy practice through required, elective and longitudinal rotations. Our program accepts two residents each year. Pharmacy residents have the unique opportunity to participate in multidisciplinary education with the medical residents and faculty of Kootenai Health’s Family Medicine Residency, as well as with physicians completing a behavioral health fellowship at our facility. Residents will work closely with medical providers as well as with various members of the healthcare team while completing their residency. Residents will present formal lectures, in-services, and prepare a major project. Residents will serve as preceptors and mentors to student pharmacists, and will participate in a teaching certificate course. Additional teaching experiences are also available at Washington State University and Idaho State University. Upon completion of the program, residents will be prepared to serve as clinical/staff pharmacists, adjunct clinical faculty, or pursue a PGY2 pharmacy residency.
The PGY1 Residency Program at Kootenai Health is strong because of our team. Our pharmacy department (preceptors and staff alike) is highly engaged and invested in the success of our residents. We take pride in watching our residents grow and succeed, and are dedicated to giving them the support and feedback necessary to do so.
Another important strength of our program is the solid relationships the pharmacy department has cultivated with other members of the healthcare team. We work closely together with the goal of providing exceptional care to our patients. Residents in our program benefit from our strong inter-professional relationships, allowing residents to integrate into our healthcare team quickly and confidently.
Third, the PGY1 Residency Program at Kootenai Health is feedback-friendly. While we give residents feedback throughout the year, we also ask that our residents provide us with feedback. We are constantly growing and consider all resident feedback when adjusting the residency program. Because we are feedback-friendly, our program is customizable to resident feedback, interests and learning needs.
Finally, our location is a strength of our program. We are located in beautiful north Idaho, with as many outdoor opportunities as there are educational opportunities. We serve as a regional referral center, providing care for many patients who live in rural settings. The ability to make a big impact on our community, while enjoying the recreation-oriented Coeur d’Alene and surrounding areas, keeps our team engaged and motivated. This results in high retention rates for pharmacy staff (and previous residents, when possible!)
The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency (ASHP-accredited) gives experience in a broad area of pharmacy practice, including:
- Ambulatory Care
- Critical Care
- Emergency Medicine
