Nutrition Services

Kootenai Health offers a wide range of nutrition services for our patients. Proper nutrition is essential to healing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Medical Nutrition Therapy

A team of qualified inpatient dietitians provide medical nutrition therapy for Kootenai Health patients. Medical nutrition therapy is an individual plan of healthy eating based on an individual’s nutritional needs and medical history. Patients have access to room service and meals that are tailored to their dietary needs. Designated family members are able to call (208) 625-6655 to place an order in the patient is not able to. Room service is available from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and is delivered directly to the patient’s room.

Registered Dietitians

Registered dietitians (RD) are food and nutrition experts, translating the science of nutrition into practical solutions for healthy living. Assisting both inpatients and outpatients, dietitians help people learn about staying health and selecting the right foods. They are the most credible and reliable source of accurate nutrition information for patients. Balance, variety and moderation are the keys to healthful eating.

Insurance Coverage

Many insurance plans will cover your visit to see a registered dietitian. Contact your insurance company to determine if medical nutrition therapy is a covered benefit. Medicare allows a certain number of visits for people with diabetes or end-stage renal disease.

Individual outpatient appointments for adults and pediatrics include (but are not limited to) medical nutrition therapy for:

  • Weight management
  • Kidney disease
  • Heart disease
  • Pre-diabetes
  • Food allergies
  • Gastrointestinal disorders
  • Liver disease
  • Hypertension
  • Disordered eating

Metabolic testing

Kootenai Health’s dietitians understand that weight management is attained through energy balance. Your metabolic rate is how many calories your body burns in a day. Dietitians can measure your metabolic rate to determine the right number of calories for your body.
