Shortly after being featured in the Spokesman review, the NICU cuddlers made even bigger waves when they caught the attention of NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt. Back in February, the volunteers who spend a minimum of four hours each week calming and cuddling with babies in Kootenai Health’s neonatal intensive care unit, spent a day with Joe Fryer with NBC news.
“Babies that are born premature need a lot of one-on-one touching and holding,” Gayle Williams, 77, told the Spokesman Review in an interview. “I had grandchildren – a set of triplets and a grandson – born premature, so I understand the need for the attention. They just prosper and grow better with that touch and care.”
