Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
Also Known As: Lou Gehrig's disease
Comprehensive care for ALS in one place.
The only ALS program in northern Idaho, Kootenai Health brings neurology, physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and social work together within a single coordinated visit. When mobility, communication, or other needs shift, the plan adjusts too. Physical medicine and rehabilitation support functional needs like spasticity and mobility. For patients navigating more advanced stages, support extends beyond the clinic through partnerships to provide specialized housing and support for patients and families facing later-stage ALS.
Living with ALS looks different for everyone. We work with patients to develop a personalized care plan to support individual needs.

ADDITIONAL SUPPORT
For when ALS changes what living at home looks like.
Through the ALS Association and Matt's Place, patients with advanced ALS may have access to needed support, including specialized housing.
How We Support You Through ALS
Evaluation – We begin with a neurological evaluation to understand symptoms and confirm diagnosis or ongoing care needs.
Building a plan – A plan is created based on current function, symptoms, and priorities, with visits that may include multiple specialists at once.
Staying with you – As ALS progresses, the plan adjusts with it. Regular follow-up and coordination across providers keeps pace with changing needs—mobility, communication, nutrition, and more.
