Neurodiagnostics
Neurodiagnostics
Advanced testing for the brain and nervous system.
Understanding what's driving neurological symptoms requires more than a picture of the brain. Standard imaging shows what the brain looks like—an EEG shows how it's working. Whether you're awake, asleep, or having a seizure, brain wave patterns tell a story that a scan can't.
Kootenai Health Neurodiagnostics supports testing across neurology, neurosurgery, and the Epilepsy Center—for conditions including epilepsy, MS, movement disorders, vascular disease, and head trauma. Every test is performed by registered technologists in Idaho's only ABRET-accredited lab.

Level 3 Epilepsy Center
Knowing where seizures start changes what you can do about them.
Types of Studies
Brain/Seizure Testing
Electroencephalogram (EEG)
An EEG records electrical activity in the brain through electrodes placed on the scalp. It measures how the brain is functioning making it useful for diagnosing a wide range of neurological conditions.
Used to evaluate:
- Seizure disorders and epilepsy
- Stroke
- Headaches and dizziness
- Altered mental status
- Degenerative brain disease
- Organic causes of psychiatric symptoms
- Irreversible brain death

Ambulatory EEG
For patients whose symptoms don't happen during a standard in-clinic study, an ambulatory EEG captures brain activity at home over one to five days, in your own environment, during your normal routine.
Nerve and Nervous System Testing
Evoked Potential (EP)
An EP measures how quickly the brain, spinal cord, or sensory nerves respond to stimulation. Response time helps identify areas of damage or dysfunction.
Used to evaluate:
- Brainstem and spinal cord injuries
- Multiple sclerosis
- Optic neuritis
- Brain injury after cardiac arrest
- Other neurological conditions
Nerve Conduction Study
Measures how fast electrical signals travel through a nerve. Results help identify nerve damage or destruction.
Testing During Surgery
Intraoperative Monitoring
During certain surgical procedures, neurodiagnostics technologists monitor brain and nerve function in real time, giving the surgical team immediate feedback on nerve pathways in the area being operated on.
Used during:
- Neurosurgery
- Orthopedic surgery
Monitoring may include:
- Evoked potentials
- Electromyography (EMG)
Newborn Screening
Newborn Hearing Screening
Every baby born at Kootenai Health's Family Birth Center receives a hearing screening. If a newborn doesn't pass the initial screening, a more detailed auditory pathway study is performed in Neurodiagnostics Services to identify any hearing problems early.
