When a baby arrives early or needs extra support adjusting to life outside the womb, it’s not the start any family expects. Kootenai Health’s Level III NICU cares for babies born as early as 26 weeks, as well as newborns who need specialized monitoring or support with breathing, feeding, blood sugar, temperature, or other medical needs, allowing many families to stay close to home for their baby’s care.
Board-certified neonatologists rotate in the hospital 24/7, working with NICU nurses, respiratory therapists, developmental therapists, nutritionists, pharmacists and other newborn experts. Each day the team reviews your baby’s breathing, feeding, growth, and medications together and adjusts the care plan as needed. They also help prepare your family for the transition home when the time is right.
As a parent, you are part of the care team. You’ll get updates during family centered rounds and opportunities to hold, touch, and feed your baby whenever possible. We also know how important it is for you to stay close by. Our NICU includes private rooms where a parent can stay overnight, along with Angel Eye cameras that securely stream video to your phone or computer so you can see your baby when you can’t be at the bedside.
Advanced newborn treatment—including breathing support, advanced imaging such as ultrasound or MRI, and cooling therapy for babies who experienced complications around the time of birth—is available right here in Coeur d’Alene so families can stay close together.
