Maternal Fetal Medicine

Advanced fetal imaging, prenatal testing, and treatment for higher-risk pregnancies in North Idaho.

Sometimes a routine prenatal screening comes back abnormal. Or a condition like diabetes or high blood pressure changes the course of pregnancy. In those moments, Kootenai Clinic’s Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) team takes a closer look and helps determine the safest path forward for you and your baby.

Most patients are referred by their OB/GYN or primary care provider after an abnormal screening result, a concern on an ultrasound, or for a maternal health condition that may affect pregnancy. Your MFM team includes physicians who specialize in high-risk pregnancy (perinatologists), along with neonatologists and genetic counselors who help evaluate fetal development and inherited conditions.

Using detailed fetal ultrasound, prenatal screening, and advanced imaging, the team monitors your baby’s growth and development. Common reasons for additional monitoring or specialized treatment include risk of preterm labor, multiple pregnancies, fetal heart rhythm concerns, and maternal conditions such as diabetes or hypertension.

MFM specialists also consult in the hospital if complications arise during pregnancy, working alongside obstetric and neonatal teams.

Telehealth consultations are available across North Idaho, giving families in rural communities access to MFM expertise without traveling long distances.

Amniocentesis

Usually recommended for higher-risk pregnancies
Amniocentesis collects a small sample of amniotic fluid to assess a baby’s genetic health and detect chromosomal conditions, helping guide pregnancy care decisions.

3D/4D Fetal Ultrasound

A closer look when screening raises questions
OB/GYNs, pediatricians, neonatologists, specialists, midwives, nurses, and therapists coordinate care in one network to reduce delays and stay aligned.

Level III NICU

Prepared for babies who need intensive care
Our Level III NICU allows many complex pregnancies and newborn conditions to be managed locally rather than transferring families to larger cities.
