Heart Rhythm Care
Heart Rhythm Care
Focused electrophysiology care for irregular heart rhythms
An irregular heartbeat can be tough to ignore. Sudden lightheadedness that forces you to sit. Hesitation before picking up a grandchild. It meets you at the front door, making you pause before your morning walk. Whether these moments are a brief disruption or a sign of something more serious, our electrophysiology team provides focused evaluation and treatment here in North Idaho.
We start by understanding your heart rhythm over time and how symptoms are affecting your day-to-day life. Using detailed electrical mapping, we identify where abnormal signals begin and explain what that means before discussing next steps. Treatment is individualized—sometimes monitoring, sometimes a minimally invasive procedure, and when needed, device support.
This level of care is available locally, without needing to travel out of the region. Kootenai Health Heart Center includes two dedicated electrophysiology (EP) labs designed for complex rhythm procedures, supported by catheter-based techniques. Most procedures are minimally invasive, with options ranging from ablation to leadless pacing, all supported by structured long-term follow-up.
The goal is not just to correct a rhythm, but to give you more confidence in how your heart will behave day to day.
Kootenai Health original Heart Center as well as recent 2022 expansion made possible through donations and community support of the Kootenai Health Foundation.

Conditions
- Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) - An irregular, often fast heartbeat that may cause symptoms — or none at all. Because AFib increases stroke risk, we assess pattern and treatment options.
- Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT) - Sudden episodes of rapid heartbeat. Confirmed through rhythm monitoring and often treated with minimally invasive ablation.
- Ventricular Tachycardia (VT) - Heart rhythms that cause dizziness or fainting can be treated with medication, ablation, or a defibrillator.
- Bradycardia & Heart Block - A rhythm that’s too slow. When needed, we offer both traditional and leadless pacemaker options.
- Syncope (Unexplained Fainting) - Heart rhythm monitoring to determine whether the heart is involved and guide appropriate treatment.
Diagnostics & Monitoring
- Electrophysiology Study (EPS) - A specialized test performed in our electrophysiology lab to map the heart’s electrical signals from inside the heart, helping to pinpoint where abnormal rhythms begin.
- Ambulatory Cardiac Monitors - Wearable monitors track your rhythm during daily life to capture symptoms.
- Implantable Loop Recorders - A small device placed under the skin records heart rhythm over months or years to detect infrequent events.
- In-Clinic Device Checks - Routine pacemaker and defibrillator evaluations and adjustments to maintain proper function.
- Remote Monitoring - Secure transmissions allow your care team to review heart rhythm data without frequent office visits.
Treatments & Procedures
- Cardioversion - A controlled electrical reset performed under sedation, often used to restore normal rhythm in AFib.
- Catheter Ablation - A minimally invasive procedure using detailed electrical mapping to identify and treat the source of abnormal rhythm pathways.
- Pacemaker Implantation - Devices used to regulate slow or irregular rhythms. Options include traditional systems and leadless pacemakers placed entirely within the heart.
- Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) - Monitors for dangerous fast rhythms and can deliver therapy to restore a normal heartbeat when needed.
- Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT) - A specialized pacing therapy that helps the heart’s chambers work together more efficiently in select patients.
- Ongoing Rhythm Management - Long-term follow-up includes monitoring, device checks, and coordination with your cardiology team.
Atrial Fibrillation Clinic
AFib is one of the most common heart rhythm disorders—and one of the most important to manage due to its connection to stroke risk.
Our Atrial Fibrillation Clinic provides focused evaluation, medication management, and ongoing follow-up for patients with new or existing AFib. This includes rhythm monitoring, stroke risk assessment, and coordination of treatment options such as ablation or left atrial appendage occlusion when appropriate.
Patients have direct access to the rhythm team for timely appointments, education, and adjustments as their condition changes. Treatment is structured to reduce gaps and allow timely changes as your rhythm or symptoms evolve.

Leading the Region in Advanced AFib Treatment
Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA)
Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA) is an advanced cardiac ablation technology that treats abnormal heart rhythms without the use of extreme heat or cold. Instead, PFA uses precise, high-voltage electrical pulses delivered in microseconds to selectively target and treat heart tissue while helping protect surrounding structures.
