Referrals to Specialty Care

Why do I need a referral before seeing a specialist?

Many specialists need a referral from a primary care doctor before they can see a patient. A referral helps connect you with the right doctor and keeps your care coordinated.

Start With Your Primary Care Doctor

Your primary care doctor can treat many common health issues and is often the best place to start with a health concern.

They can look at your symptoms, health history and any test results to understand what kind of care you need.

If your primary care doctor thinks you need extra help, they can refer you to a doctor with special training. Specialists focus on one area, like the heart, brain or bones, and know more about certain conditions. Your primary care doctor can use what they know about your health to help connect you with a specialist who can best help you.

A referral also helps your care stay organized. Your doctor can share relevant medical information with the specialist, so you don’t have to explain everything again. After your visit, the specialist can send notes back to your regular doctor. This way, both doctors can work together to care for you.

Healthcare, tablet or talking with nurse and old woman in home living room for feedback or review. App, conversation or medical checkup with caregiver and senior patient in apartment for diagnosis.

Does My Insurance Require a Referral?

Sometimes, your insurance company requires a referral before you can see a specialist.

Requirements vary by insurance plan, so check with your insurance company before scheduling specialty care to understand what is required and covered.
