Endoscopy
Also Known As Upper Endoscopy, EGD
Higher-level endoscopic care is available here so you don’t have to travel for answers.
Trouble swallowing, reflux, digestive issues: with an endoscopic procedure, your care team can better pinpoint causes behind disruptive GI symptoms and plan for what to do next. An endoscopy allows your doctor to see the upper digestive tract directly, including the esophagus, stomach, and the first part of the small intestine using a small, flexible camera. This level of visibility helps identify the source of symptoms and evaluate conditions that imaging alone may miss.
Your endoscopy is performed with sedation, so you’ll be comfortable throughout. Most patients don’t feel or remember the exam. From check-in to discharge, a physician, anesthesia specialist, nurse, and technician work together to keep things moving smoothly and privately. Most visits are completed within a couple of hours. Before you leave, your provider will review the initial findings with you and explain next steps.

Here's what a typical endoscopy visit looks like from start to finish.
Scheduling an Appointment
Once your provider submits a referral, our team typically reaches out within five business days. Most patients have their procedure scheduled within two weeks.
Preparing for Your Endoscopy
You'll be asked to fast from eating or drinking for several hours before your appointment to ensure your stomach is empty. Your care team will provide specific instructions when you schedule, including any guidance on medications you take regularly.
There's no bowel preparation required for a standard upper endoscopy.
Because of sedation used in the procedure, you'll need to arrange for a driver to take you home.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the procedure?
From when you check-in, it’s about an hour and a half.
Will they remove polyps during my procedure?
Yes, if possible.
Will I feel anything during the procedure?
You'll receive sedation before the procedure begins. Most patients feel no discomfort and don't remember the procedure.
When will I get my results?
Final pathology results are typically available within three to five days. As soon as results are processed and your provider has reviewed and interpreted them, they're available to you through MyChart — where two-way communication means you can ask questions directly without waiting for a callback.
If you don't have MyChart or haven't seen your results, a nurse will call to walk you through the findings and your provider's recommendations.
Can I eat after the procedure?
Your care team will give you specific instructions before you leave. Most patients can resume a normal diet shortly after, though you may be advised to start with light foods.
Can I drive myself home?
No. Sedation affects your reflexes longer than it may feel like it does. You'll need someone to drive you and should not drive for the rest of that day.
Does my driver have to wait for me in the lobby?
No, your driver is free to leave as long as you have their cell phone number to give to the nurse.
Does my insurance cover this procedure?
