Local Firefighter Donates to Helmet Safety Program

May 22, 2019

After surviving a brutal bike crash in 2018, Spokane Valley firefighter, Montana Sturges, decided to use his experience to help children learn the value of wearing a helmet. Through several fundraising efforts, Sturges successfully raised $2,000 to give to the Kootenai Health Foundation to benefit Kootenai’s Injury Prevention program.

“Montana single-handedly raised enough money to support our helmet safety program in five-to-six elementary schools,” Wendy Ferguson, Injury Prevention program coordinator, said. “That’s a lot of kids who can receive a safe, proper-fitting helmet because of him.”

Kootenai’s Injury Prevention team visits local schools, educating students on proper helmet safety and usage. So far, over 300 helmets have been distributed to local children. If you missed the opportunity to have your helmet checked for safety, you can come to Kootenai Health’s Injury Prevention team’s Bike Rodeo on June 26 at the Hayden Library.
