2019 Nursing Annual Report
The 2019 annual report for
nursing celebrates the extraordinary role nurses at Kootenai
Health play in caring for our
community and the outcomes
that have been achieved as a
result of their commitment to excellence. As our community
has grown in size so has our labor force. Our nursing workforce has grown in both size and scale while learning to care
for more complex patients.
2018 Nursing Annual Report
Nationally, there is a vision to move the focus of health care from illness to a focus on wellness in partnership with
our patients. Kootenai Health has made great strides to align our work with that vision and our nursing teams have been instrumental and influential in the journey. This year’s annual report reflects stories recognizing our nurses and interdisciplinary teams who have been at the forefront of those change efforts at Kootenai Health.
Nursing Excellence – Magnet Status
Kootenai has maintained MagnetTM status since 2006. This designation is nursing’s top honor, accepted nationally as the gold standard in nursing excellence. Kootenai Health is the second hospital in Idaho to receive this designation and the first in the Inland Northwest.

Growth Opportunities
We give you all the tools you need so you can find your own path to success. If you are interested in working in one of our specialty programs, you can contact a Recruiter to discuss options, such as the Nurse Residency Program, Fellowship Program, OR 101 Course, or Leadership Academy.
RN Fellowship Program
The Kootenai RN Fellowship program is an extremely competitive program that prepares the nurse for specialty areas of nursing care. The program accepts only the most outstanding and committed applicants. The Kootenai RN Fellowship program is a 3 month, full-time program that is physically and mentally challenging. Those selected are on a fast track to gaining the knowledge and skill needed to become an experienced nurse in one of these specialty areas:
- Labor and Delivery
- NICU
- Critical Care
- Heart Services
- Emergency Department
Those selected work in their chosen specialty area and participate in an aggressive blend of classroom education and accelerated clinical experiences.
Nurse Leadership Academy
The aspiring nurse leader program identifies and creates a pathway for clinical nurses who demonstrate leadership potential and seek to be managers/directors in the future. Program participants are assigned to an experienced mentor and complete a 12-month program of reading, courses and experiences that culminates in completion of an evidence-based practice project. Program participants will be prepared to step into available leadership positions, reducing time to fill for these critical roles.
