The Kootenai Health Nurse Fellowship Program provides an innovative, person-centered support structure for the acquisition of evidence-based practice, standardization of knowledge and skills to ensure our nurses are confidently prepared, supported, and engaged in their new work environment.
The Nurse Fellowship Program is designed for nurses who have more than one year of hospital-based nursing experience and are transitioning to a new specialty. While in the program nurse fellows are hired into paid, fully-benefitted, full time (36-40 hours/pay period) staff nurse positions. Specific teams with fellowship programs include:
- Critical Care
- Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR)
- Peri-op 101
- Emergency Department
- Labor and Delivery
- Invasive Cardiovascular Labs (Cardiac Cath Lab & Electrophysiology Lab)
Program Overview
Our 6-12 month program (depending on unit) provides Nurse Fellows with:
- Socialization and networking support
- Didactic, targeted teaching and on-site simulation learning experiences
- Supplemental activities to promote nursing professional development
- 24 hour access to a robust, interdisciplinary on-site library
- Three to six months (unit specific) of direct bedside precepting support
- Mentor and leadership support
- A professional nursing culture and education environment consistent with the ANCC Magnet designation — the national standard for nursing excellence in the United States.

Kootenai Health is committed to providing Nurse Fellows with the teaching, training, mentoring and experience needed for a successful career in a new practice setting.
Continued success in your role requires:
- Full-time employment with Kootenai Health for 24 months following the completion of the Nurse Fellowship program.
- Obtaining a specialty certification in your nursing specialty (such as CCRN, CEN, CNOR) within 24 months of completing the program.
